The 2025 Australian Open: Promotions, Demotions, and Other Stats

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna)
  • Madison Keys for beating Yokozuna Iga Swiatek in the semifinals

Other noteworthy developments:

  • Jannik Sinner defended his Australian Open title and became the 19th male Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) of the Open Era. Please see the separate article.
  • By contast, Ozeki (=Champion) Aryna Sabalenka fell again one win short of elevation to the highest rank, by losing the final to former Ozeki Madison Keys. Sabalenka remains on a Yokozuna run though and needs a final participation at the 2025 French Open for the ultimate promotion. For now she remains at Ozeki, as does the unsuccesful men's finalist, Alexander Zverev (who, different from Sabalenka, is not on a Yokozuna run though).
  • Ozeki Daniil Medvedev lost early and goes kadoban - he needs to reach the quarterfinals at the French Open to avoid demotion. Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Krejcikova were already kadoban, and as they failed again to reach the quarterfinals, they get demoted to Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I). Rank protection isn't fully extinguished though: both can regain Ozeki rank if they make the semifinals at the French Open. Ex-Ozeki Cori Gauff was in that very situation here at the Australian Open, but fell one win short. Exit in the quarterfinals means Gauff defends Sekiwake rank though.
  • Keys is a career-high Ozeki already, as she held that rank in 2018/19. She does not return to Ozeki though, as this is only her first grand slam title. Keys would need a quarterfinal at the French Open to ascend again to her former rank.

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna):
  • Yulia Putintseva for beating Yokozuna Iga Swiatek in round 3

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back and thus became the 18th male Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) of the Open Era - joining an elite group of players that have dominated the sport in the past 55 years. Alcaraz's is the first Yokozuna promotion since Andy Murray's in 2016 - see the separate article.
  • Jannik Sinner's and Aryna Sabalenka's Yokozuna runs ended unsuccesfully, by contrast. Sabalenka had to sit out the tournamnet injured, while Sinner went out in the quarterfinals to fellow Ozeki (=Champion) Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev and Sinner held Ozeki rank, but Sabalenka goes kadoban: she needs to reach the quarterfinals at the 2024 US Open to defend Ozeki rank. The same holds for Alexander Zverev, Cori Gauff, and Marketa Vondrousova.
  • Former Ozeki and Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina held Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I) rank with a semifinal participation.

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna):
  • none

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Iga Swiatek won her fifth Grand Slam title and thus became the 19th female Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) of the Open Era, joining a small elite club of women players who have dominated the sport in the past 56 years. Yokozuna promotions are rare events, on average they occur only every three years or so. See the separate article.
  • Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev and Aryna Sabalenka also had chances to earn a Yokozuna promotion but couldn't get the result needed. Sabalenka and Medvedev lost in the quarterfinals/round of 16, respectively, and need to start over. Australian Open champion Sinner reached the semifinals and hence remains on a Yokozuna run, he needs to win the 2024 Wimbledon tournament to get elevated to the highest rank. French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz would also become a Yokozuna if he wins at Wimbledon.
  • Sabelanka and Sinner held Ozeki (=Champion) rank though, while Medvedev goes kadoban: he needs to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon to defend his rank. Semifinalist Cori Gauff also held Ozeki. Finalist Alexander Zverev got himself re-promoted to the rank that he held already in 2020-22.
  • Former Ozeki Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur lost in the quarterfinals and hence fell one win short from earning a re-promotion to their former rank. Both remain at Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I).
  • In the men's game, there is no active Komusubi (=Junior Champion II): the current 6 top ranking players have won most marbles at the last three slams and have left little for anybody else. In addition to Alcaraz, Sinner, Medvedev and Zverev, these 'big 6' include Dai-Yokozuna (=Great Grand Champion) Novak Djokovic and current Sekiwake and ex-Ozeki Casper Ruud.

Sabalenka would get promoted to Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) if she reaches the final at the 2024 French Open, Medvedev if he wins the tournament. By contrast, Marketa Vondrousova lost early and goes kadoban - she needs to reach the quarterfinals at the French Open to hold rank.
  • Andrey Rublev held Komusubi (=Junior Champion II) rank with yet another quarterfinal. It's his 10th overall, and he has held Komusubi rank for seven tournaments now, without ever making it to Sekiwake (=Junior Champion II). Both are open era records

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna (=Great Grand Champion) Novak Djokovic continues to wrute history, adding a 24th Grand Slam title to his tally. He had therefore equalled Margaret Court's record.
  • Ozeki (=Champion) Carlos Alcaraz was on a Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) run but would have needed to win the tournament - he lost his semifinal to Daniil Medvedev, who returns to Ozeki after a year and a half absence. A victory at the 2024 Australian Open would still get Alcaraz promoted to Yokozuna though.
  • Aryna Sabalenka held Ozeki rank with a final participation. All the other female Ozeki - Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina - lost early and go kadoban, i.e., they need to reach the quarterfinals at the 2024 Australian Open to hold rank. With the new addition of 2023 Wimbledon Chanmpion Marketa Vondrousova, there are now five Ozeki - but still no active Yokozuna - in the women's game.
  • Caspar Ruud got demoted from Ozeki to Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I) after failing to reach a quarterfinal for the second consecutive time, but has a one-time chance to regain Ozeki rank with a semifinal participation at the 2024 Australian Open.
  • Alexander Zverev - a former Ozeki - and Andrey Rublev held Komusubi (=Junior Champion II) rank with quarterfinal participations.

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka were both on a Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) run, but would have needed to win the tournament to get promoted. As they reached the quarterfinal or better, however, both defended Ozeki (=Champion) rank. Also Carlos Alcaraz, Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina confirmed Ozeki status, while Casper Ruud goes kadoban - he needs to get to the quarterfinals at the 2023 US Open to hold rank. Alcaraz is on now on a Yokozuna run.
  • Dai-Yokozuna (=Champion) Rafael Nadal missed the tournament injured and loses active Yokozuna status, as he hasn't been in a Grand Slam quarterfinal in a year.
  • Former Sekiwake (= Junior Champion I) Marketa Vondrousova and Elena Svitolina returned to their former rank after lengthy absences due to injury/pregnancy, respectively.

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna (=Great Grand Champion) Novak Djokovic won his 23rd grand slam title, thereby becoming the sole record winner of grand slam tournaments, ahead of 22-times winner Rafael Nadal. Fellow Dai-Yokozuna Nadal sat out the tournament injured and will lose active Yokozuna status if he fails to reach the seminfal at the 2023 Wimbledon tournament.
  • Ozeki (=Champion) Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Aryna Sabalenka and Caspar Ruud all held rank with quarterfinal participtations or better. Australian Open champion Sabalenka was on a Yokozuna (=Grand Champion), which failed for now due to a loss in the semifinals to Karolina Muchova. However, Sabalenka and French Open champion Swiatek are both on active Yokozuna runs now, as either of them would be promoted to the highest rank if they win Wimbledon.
  • Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I) and ex-Ozeki Stefanos Tsitsipas, Sekiwake Karen Khachanov and Komusubi and ex-Sekiwake Cori Gauff all held rank with quarterfinal participations.

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna (=Great Grand Champion) Novak Djokovic won his 22nd grand slam title, thereby equalling Rafael Nadal's record. Nadal, by contrast, has not reached a grand slam quarterfinal since the 2022 Wimbledon Tournament and needs to make the quarterfinals at Roland Garros this year to remain an active Yokozuna.
  • Ozeki (=Champion) Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur and Caspar Ruud all exited before the quarterfinals and therefore go kadoban: they need to reach the quarterfinals at the French Open to defend rank.

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna):
  • Frances Tiafoe for beating Dai-Yokozuna Rafael Nadal in Round 4

Other noteworthy developments:
  • For the first time since the 2020 US Open, and for the second time only since the 2004 French Open (!), none of the three Dai-Yokozuna (= Great Grand Champion) Novak Djokovic , Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer reached the Grand Slam semifinals. Djokovic and Federer did not participate, Nadal went out in Round 4.
  • There is still no active Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) in the ladies' game, although US Open Champion Iga Swiatek is inching closer. She needs to win the 2023 Australian Open or reach the seminfals down under and win the 2023 French Open to get promoted to the highest rank. Two lost finals at the Australian and French open would also do.
  • The injured Alexander Zverev lost Ozeki (=Champion) status and got demoted to Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I) as he missed the second consecutive grand slam tournament. He needs to reach the semifinals at the 2023 Australian Open to be re-promoted immediately.
  • Nick Kyrgios, ex-Ozeki Matteo Berrettini, and Cori Gauff all held Sekiwake rank with a quarterfinal participatoin. Kyrgios was one win away from an Ozeki promotion. Jannik Sinner held Komusubi (=Junior Champion II) rank.

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna):
  • none

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna (Great Grand Champion) Novak Djokovic won his 21st grand slam title. He also takes - for the first time in his career - the #1 spot in the results based open area top 20 ranking, as his deeper record in grand slam finals and semifinals more than compensates for the one title that fellow Dai-Yokozuna Rafael Nadal has more. Nadal had to exit injured before the semi-finals, preventing him from defending his spot.
  • Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini all lost active Ozeki (=Champion) status for failing to reach a grand slam quarterfinal for the second time in a row, altough for different reasons: Medvedev was not allowed to participate for his nationality, Tsitsipas exited early, while Berrettini fell sick. They are Sekiwake-Ozeki now: a semifinal at the US Open would get them back to Ozeki. The other Ozeki, Alexander Zverev and Iga Swiatek, go kadoban - they have to reach the quarterfinals at the US Open to hold rank
  • Finalist Nick Kyrgios earned a first time Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I) promotion, more than seven years after ascending to Komusubi (=Junior Champion II) at the 2015 Austrlaian Open. The finalists in the ladies' tournament, Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur, also earn a first time Komusubi promotion.

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna):
  • none

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna (Great Grand Champion) Rafael Nadal won his 22st grand slam title. He is now two titles clear of both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, which more then compensates for the latter's deeper record in terms of final and semifinal participations. Nadal therefore moves - for the first time in his career - to the #1 spot in the results based open area top 20 ranking.
  • Ozeki and 2022 Australian Open Champion Ashleigh Barty retired surprisingly before the French Open. Sanyaku tennis will carry her in the rankings though until she moves organically out of them, for now she is a kadoban Ozeki. The ladies' game remains without an activie Yokozuna - French Open winner and newly promoted Ozeki Iga Swiatek would have to win the 2022 Wimbledon tournament to change this.
  • Alexander Zverev defended Ozeki rank, but had to retire injured in his semifinal with Rafael Nadal. Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas went out early while Matteo Berrettini withdrew. They therefore go kadbon and need to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon to defend Ozeki rank. Medvedev won't have this opportunity as the Wimbledon organizers disqualified him from participating on the basis of his nationality - a decision that Sanyaku Tennis considers mistaken

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna):
  • Amanda Anisimova (ex-Komusubi) - for beating Yokozuna Naomi Osaka in Round 3

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna (Great Grand Champion) Rafael Nadal won his 21st grand slam title and therefore the most slams of any male tennis player in the open era.
  • In terms of the pure stats, however, Nadal remains #3 in the open area top 20 ranking - behind Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who both have 20 titles but participated in many more grand slam finals and semifinals. This said, Sanyaku Tennis does not really participate in the so-called GOAT debate. To us, every player who reached Dai-Yokozuna status represents the pinnacle of the sport, with unique achievements each in his or her own way. Splitting hair at this level is silly: you don't compare royalty.
  • Finalist Daniil Medvedev got promoted to Ozeki (=Champion), but he missed out by a whisker on back-to-back grand slam titles and hence on an immediate Yokozuna (=Grand Champion) promotion - he would have been the 19th male Yokzouna of the open era. Medvedev looks every bit like a future Yokozuna, but one never knows. Semifinalist Matteo Berrettini also got promoted to Ozeki, while the other semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas earned a re-repromotion to the same rank.
  • The "next gen" fills four Ozeki slots now and has truly arrived in the sanyaku rankings (the fourth Ozeki Alexander Zverev, who lost early and goes kadoban - i.e. needs a quarterfinal to the French open to defend rank). This said, noone has made it to Yokozuna yet - this is still reserved to the old masters, Nadal and Djokovic (the third master, Federer, is an inactive Yokozuna at present).
  • In the ladies's game, Ashleigh Barty won her third grand slam title and confimed Ozeki rank. She is now the top tier in ladies' tennis, as both Yokozuna - Dai-Yokozuna Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka - failed to make the semifinals in four consecutive grand slam tournaments (Williams did not participate this time, Osaka lost in round 3). Hence both are listed as inactive Yokozuna now, leaving ladies' tennis without an active Grand Champion. By contrast, the lower Sanyaku ranks (Sekiwake and Komusubi) are filled with no less than 9 female players who had success at the last three grand slam tournaments, among them Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins.

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna):
  • Leylah Fernandez - for beating Yokozuna Naomi Osaka in Round 3

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna (Great Grand Champion) Novak Djokovic just missed out on his 21st grand slam title, and therefore remains on par with Roger Federer's and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic remains #2 in the stats-based open area top 20 ranking, behind Federer but ahead of Nadal (the rank order is determined by the number of finals and semifinals participations).
  • Both Dai-Yokozuna Serena Williams - who missed the tournament injured - and Yokozuna (Grand Champion) Naomi Osaka - who exited in round 3 - are at risk of losing active Yokozuna status if they fail to reach the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Open
  • Sekiwake (Junior Champion I) Daniil Medvedev won his first grand slam tournament. Although Medvedev is now arguably more accomplished than either Alexander Zverev or Stefanos Tsitsipas, different from them he did not clear the "great hurdle" to Ozeki ("Champion") yet, as for this consistency at a high level over several tournament is required - and Medvedev's results at the preceding 2021 Wimbledon tournament and French Open were somewhat weaker. He is in an excellent postition to secure Ozeki rank soon, however, he needs a quarterfinal participation at the 2022 Australian Open or a semifinal at the 2022 French Open.
  • Alexander Zverev defended Ozeki rank with a semifinal participation, while Stefanos Tsitsipas exited early and gets demoted to Sekiwake. He has one chance at the Australian Open to regain Ozeki status immediately, however, if he reaches the semifinals. Ashleigh Barty also lost early and goes kadoban: she needs to reach the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Open to defend rank.
  • In a strange quirk, the number of Komusubi (Junior Champion II) went from 11 to 0 after the US Open, while the number of Sekiwake went from 2 to 10: four on the men's side and five on the ladies'. Five out of the ten Sekiwake are first-time Sekiwake promotees. These include Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez, who played the first all-teenager ladies' grand slam final since Serena Williams vs. Martina Hingis in 1999.

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna):
  • Elena Rybakina - for beating Dai-Yokozuna Serena Williams in Round 4

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna Novak Djokovic won his 19th grand slam title, eding again one win closer to Roger Federer's and Rafael Nadal's record of 20 titles.
  • Roger Federer failed to reach a grand slam quarterfinal for the fourth consecutive tournament and therefore loses active Yokozuna status. He needs a semifinal at Wimbledon to return once more as an active Yokozuna
  • Ex-Ozeki Domique Thiem and Sofia Kenin got demoted to Sekiwake after failing twice in a row to reach a grand slam quarterfinal. A semifinal at Wimbledon would restore Ozeki status
  • Alexander Zverev held Ozeki rank with a seminfal participation. Danil Medvedev fell again one win short of jumping the "big hurdle" to Ozeki, he needs now to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon to make it to Ozeki.

Natalia Podoroska Maegashira Komusubi

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna): none

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Dai-Yokozuna Novak Djokovic won his 18th grand slam title, eding closer to Roger Federer's and Rafael Nadal's record. Djokovic remains #4 in the merit-based open era ranking for now. 20 grand slam titles would get Djokovic past Rod Laver. Should Djokovic one day reach the same number of grand slam titles as Federer and Nadal, the deeper record in terms of final and semifinal participations would determine the ranking - which, at the moment, would place Djokovic behind Federer but favor him over Nadal.
  • Yokozuna Naomi Osaka won again the US and the Australian Open back-to-back. Her 4th grand slam title overall also gets Osaka into the open era top 20 ranking at #17 - at the expense of former Ozeki Angelique Kerber, who drops out of the top 20. Dai-Yokozuna and semi-finalist Serena Williams remains #2, after falling again just short of winning her 24st grand slam title that would get her past Margaret Court.
  • Ozeki Domique Thiem and Sofia Kenin lost before the quarterfinals and hence goes kadoban - they must reach the quarterfinals at the next grand slam tournament (presumably the French Open) to defend Ozeki rank. Alexander Zverev, by contrast, secured Ozeki rank for at least another two grand slam tournaments with a quarterfinal particpation.
  • Simona Halep and Ashleigh Barty both fell short by one win of restoring Ozeki-rank as they exited in the quarterfinals. Both remain at Sekiwake, with Ozeki rank-protection extinguished.
  • Danil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jennifer Brady all fell one match short of jumping the "big hurdle" to Ozeki, even though Tsitsipas and Brady earned a first-time Sekiwake promotion. A semi-final at the next slam would get any of them to Ozeki. Andrey Rublev held Komusubi rank.

Kinboshi:
("gold star" - prize awarded to a non-sanyaku ranked competitor for beating an active Yokozuna): none

Other noteworthy developments:
  • Due to the Covid-pandemic, the French Open were the last (rather than the 2nd) grand slam tournament to be played in 2020.
  • Dai-Yokozuna Rafael Nadal won his 20st grand slam title, equalling Roger Federer's record, and his 13th title at the French Open - a lonely record. As a result, Nadal moves to #2 in the merit-based open era ranking: we placed Federer ahead of Rod Laver when he won his 20th grand slam title, hence we do the same now with Nadal. Given Federer's deeper record in terms of grand slam final and semifinal participations, Nadal would arguably need 22 titles though to move to the #1 spot.
  • Ozeki Alexander Zverev lost before the quarterfinals (in the 4th round) and hence goes kadoban - he must reach the quarterfinals at the next grand slam tournament (presumably the Australian Open) to defend Ozeki rank. Dominic Thiem, by contrast, secured Ozeki rank for at least another two grand slam tournaments with a quarterfinal particpation.
  • Simona Halep and Ashleigh Barty both get demoted from Ozeki to Sekiwake, but have a one-time chance to restore Ozeki rank with a semifinal participation at the next slam.
